This was my first build. I more or less won this bike at a card game. I was playing cards at my wife's Uncle Paul's house in Tewksbury. After losing seven bucks, I took a break from the high stakes and headed into the garage for another beer and a shot of Old Grand Dad.

In the back of the garage I saw this 1977 Triumph Bonneville T-140V under an inch of dust and another foot of cardboard boxes. So I headed back into the card game and asked Paul about the bike. If I remember correctly, he told me that he bought the bike in 1980. Ok...I'm not one to complain so let's just say we had a great day in the garage trouble shooting the freshly re-phased xs with good ole' Chris from H.O.T.W. & Show Class. For some odd reason the left cylinder refuses to fire...we pulled the head, re-timed the cam wheel, flipped coils, carbs, & wires...and still no left side fire. We've come to find a pretty serious head gasket leak on the left side...can this be the culprit???? We hope it's that easy...all and any feedback is welcome.

It's mid March and every one is in a mad dash to finish their shit. Phil needs springs for his front end, and his rear fender fixed. Jason is trying to get the iron head together for the season. Chris is piecing together his triumph feverishly. Joey is so far ahead of the game all of us are trying to catch up! I don't even have my frame back from powder coat yet! If rubber don't hit the road in two weeks the Boston scene will be a month behind!!!!

So if you're into Triumphs then you've probably heard of Don Hutchinson Cycle located in the fine town of Wakefield, MA. Let me tell you if you haven't heard of Don, your dealing with the wrong people. Just this past weekend J.M. and myself headed up to Don's to pick up a few items for J.M.'s freshly re-phased motor, and a newly honed cylinder for Chris over at H.O.T.W.

Not for nothin' but I have to say a few kind words about what an amazing experience we have every time we walk in and see good ole' Hutch. Maybe it's his Socratic way of talking you through any questions or issues one may have.....maybe it's good ole' Tom's NASCAR commemorative plate poetry...or maybe it's Choppahead Jay's daily life rants.

Whatever it is Hutch has a solid team of mechanics, and fabricators in his shop. If your within earshot of Don's shop be sure to stop in for a quick visit! (Average Estimated Time per Visit...60min.) It all just depends on what's going on in the great minds of the crew over at Don Hutchinson Cycle!

These are just a few shots I took while we were there for a "quick" stop in for parts over the weekend!

This little gem Tom is working on is going to make it to Bonneville.

The greasebag is now going to be a 2-day, Sat-Sun event. Saturday: Ride New England backroads from MA to NH. Camp. Drink. Terrorize the locals. Pass out.
Sunday: Ride to Acme Choppers in Laconia for the bike show and party. Eat, drink, get stupid.
The greasebag is no longer during bike week.
Yeah, we’re done with that shit. The last weekend in July will be the new date for the greasebag moving forward. Better weather, less douchery. Win-win for us. No traffic, no overpriced everything. Plenty of killer roads to ride and less bro-dudes to deal with.
Admission is still free. We’re hoping to do a few new things for the people this year, but it’s too early to talk about.

So we've finally made it through our denial stage and have come to realize that our season of ride has been transitioned into the season of rebuild. Over the past two days we've pulled the xs motor and fully disassembled the beast.

We're going to send the cam & crank down to our friend Hugh over at Hugh's Hand Built in North Carolina. Hugh is a master of re-phasing the cam & crank. Basically re-phasing is the changing of the firing order and the timing of the pistons by cutting the cam in half and re-positioning the crank to 277 degrees...this is a very delicate process and not for the faint of heart. Be sure to check out Hugh's work at Hugh's Hand Built. He's got a really great & detailed explanation of the re-phasing process.

So its January, the snow came, and the holidays have
done what damage they will. I started to tear into the
motor of the xs650 today. I'm sure nothings wrong with it
but i want to make it better, and spend money and, and ,and......

Up next for it...big boar kit, re-phased crank and cam, new ignition,
new seat suitable for two up travel if the need should arise, and new
skinny lane splitter handle bars. I pulled the motor to repair
the stock part of the frame where the upper rear motor mount
cracked. I don't know if it was the bad roads in Brooklyn, the
bad roads of Dorchester, the jumping of curbs, the raised
expansion joints on the express way, or the.......anyway. If the
motor had to come out, I had to re build it. It just seams to be the
right thing to do. On a side note my '78 HD Ironhead cases minus
the trans is back in the garage for some finesse work to the rest
of the mutilated carcass it has become. Happy New Year!

This one of a kind build is the handy work of Stripped Down Cycles in Illinois. I have nabbed photos of this bike off every forum and blog that has put them up, trying to find out more about it since I stumbled across it during a midnight google image search on old HD iron.

Rod Davis is the man that hammered this creation out. He built it for smoke out 10 and if i'm not mistaken, he won! there is a write up on his web site from The Horse, and a link to a better bit of praise on the kemosabe and the lodge blog. I think about this very bike on nearly a daily basis. its becoming an unhealthy infatuation.

Brooklyn Invitational

Lets start this story with a single phrase to hold in your head while you read this poor run down of the summers best motorcycle event "pure passion". This road trip started like any other pack your gear, stow your shit, and get moving early.

Hooked up with the Fish early on Friday and rolled on down to Manhattan; sadly by bus not on the bikes. We got into the city early and made our way to brooklyn.

Almost as soon as we landed on Montrose Avenue, The Prohibited of the World activities were on!!! PBR's and hipster transplants included. Around 11am we hooked up with road captain Dr. Deathhead and grabbed our gear and wheels.

We split for a warehouse Bar-B-Que and hopped ourselves up on hot dogs and Bud Heavy's! After our feast we collected the crew to roll over to the DICE MAG release party at Matchless.

Well after the sun had set we rolled out tearing into the rutted streets testing every bit of our bike welds and brakes!

So JM and I hit the city last night to see what mischief we could find...and with what we we're given in this fine city...we didn't really find any! (Thanks Mr. Menino) Although I have to say we met some pretty cool cats out there. We ran across Mike (aka Rigid Tranny Man), and his sidekick George. We stopped outside the Paramount to shoot a few photos...(yea I know we're not Norman Rockwell...yea I know he's a painter but i don't really know any famous photographers) During the process a Boston PW truck pulled up to check out what we were doing and it ended up being a good hour of shop talk with Mike and George. This is why we ride and love what we do. Our bikes allow us to meet some real class people with real work ethics, and have a great sense of what real life is. It was a pleasure hanging with you Rigid Tranny Man and your sidekick George...oh yea, i can't forget lucas who drinks beer off of shop floors...at least that's what you'll see him doing in Choppahead Vol.3 We met Lucas outside McGreevy's with his '73 Bonnie! hat's off to you Lucas!

Shit happens to everyone. Lately it happened to me, as you all know. Not something I'd want to go through again, but those are the risks we take to be able to ride a motorcycle, and I'm sure most of you have this same passion for two wheels. The out pour of support that I received is unreal. It shows not only your passion for riding but your LOVE for your fellow rider, and it is something that made me go all mushy inside to say the least. It will not be forgotten by me or my family. I have to take time to mend up and I'm awaiting a couple more surgeries, but I am optimistic about being back in the shop and on the road as soon as I can. Gotta put my projects on hold in the mean time...just when I was making progress on the chevy. Damn.

Brian has said thanks to everyone that has had a hand in my support but I want to dually thank all of you! Everyone who bought a shirt, donated money or goodies, or just sent a concerned or get well email, I want you to know I am more grateful than I can express and we are working on something special for you. So the other day Chris and Joey from Hated of the World stopped by to check out the progress on JM's XS. It was a great couple of hours hanging in the garage catching up and discussing on how we all want to take over the world. On the way home Joey was unfortunately cut off by a minivan who made an illegal right turn from the left lane. Another case of ignorant cagers not paying attention. It blows my mind how many people I see on a daily basis that don't pay attention while driving. FUUUUUUCCCKKKKK it pisses me off!

To keep it simple, Joe hit hard and basically snapped his leg in half along with his little finger. He's under some great care and has a long road to recovery. JM went to see him last night, and here's his recap:

just got home from visiting joe in the hospital. he is in good spirits, and has a great staff at the hospital caring for him. He is banged up pretty good and uncomfortable to say the least but holding up. He is touched by the out pouring of support. "the support from this scene is awesome" words spoken by joe earlier today. Less then 24 hours later a lot of you have grabbed up shirts and offered proceeds from your wares. It goes with out saying that is incredibly honorable of you guys. A thousand thanks would not be enough. I can't find the
words to describe the mood around here. Rage, disbelief, and the frustration of not being able burn down the city. Time will heal Joes wounds. Money from the hopefuly insured cager will get his wheels rollin' again, and god willing, a good lawyer will make her pay. Big ups to Chris for keeping his shit together through this tough stretch. Brother if any one needs a break, its you.

XS Update

JM is working diligently on the XS...the rear master cylinder is in place along with the one off rear brake pedal and housing. The tins are just about done being sanded and ready for color. JM should have his new oil pump installed by the weeks end. The light at the end of the tunnel is starting to get bigger!!!!

So I came across a great gentleman on You Tube who goes by the name lunmad. He has a great collection of Triumph tutorials and i thought it would be great to share them with you all. These first two videos show you how to install a boyer electronic ignition (which I suggest if you don't have one, invest in one...you'll thank me later.) We had a great run on Sunday. After a work filled morning we met up with the gents from Hated of the World. We headed up to Eastern Boarder to meet some fellow misfits and share some brews, burgers and a story or two! About 4 miles prior to our destination, mother nature decided to give us her blessing. Upon on arrival the parking lot was pretty empty thanks to mother nature, but as I always say it's quality...not quantity. It was great to meet some faces behind the JJ and CC handles. It was great to share some grilled corn, burgers, dogs, and PBR (Thanks Eastern Boarder for the hospitality!) with the one and only Bugles, Tickface, Dr. Benway, Special 79, Herb, and Grail. After the hang at EB we headed north to Ipswich to try out the famous Clam Box. (The Clam Box at Wollaston Beach is much better.) Thanks to Chris, Joey, and Jay, for taking the ride!

JM has been bustin' his ass on his XS 650 at PGCo.!!! He's now in the back stretch getting the frame back from paint. He's now in roller position. The tins should be done real soon and we can't wait to see how they turn out!!! I leave it as a surprise to what color he chose!!! The motor is getting some new oil tubes and plates and should be ready to install in the next week!
